Daemon 6
- DAEMON 6 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It is part of the "Daemon" series I started for "Fantastic Stories".
My text for the story appeared in white ink along the bottom of the illustration, which extended down to accommodate all the text:
"I have chosen my crew carefully; men unafraid to live, unafraid to die free. Silent they are now. I have listened to their tales of war, of love. We have laughed and cried together, remembering good comrades lost in battle, good women left behind. These are honest men, leaving decent folk to their own destiny. They fight only those who would shackle their freedom. Giant men with giant hearts whose immortal challenge of life makes the sun's golden glory pale by comparison".
There has never been peace on Earth, killing seems to be the natural state of living things. At this very moment, as you read this, all over the planet billions of creatures are killing one another in an effort to survive; insects, birds, fish, and animals, which includes mankind.
But though "peace" is alien to Earth, it is the ultimate goal of all civilized people. I would make my hero hate the idea of killing, but I will involve him in battles because there are times when evil humans give civilized people no other option.
